Old Sarum
Location: Wiltshire
Type: Housing + Sports and leisure facilities
The project creates a Masterplan to guarantee the survival of Old Sarum as an airfield and preserve the history for future generations to enjoy.
The masterplan uses land which can be used for residential development, without affecting the primary use as a historic airfield, creating value along with the opportunity to enhance existing facilities and add leisure opportunities to create an exciting and dynamic destination.
The importance of the airfield lies in its physical relationship between its listed WWI hangers, its grass flying field and its setting within the proximity of Old Sarum Hill Fort, a scheduled monument.
The masterplan includes 480 dwellings, refurbishment of WW1 hangars, a new control tower, archive facilities, a restaurant, and a museum flying centre. It was designed as a holistic approach to achieving a financially sustainable, active airfield.
